The weeks came and went and their little furtive escapades were almost a daily occurrence. Deborah was happy; she was getting Aviva to lose herself and be proactive in their mutual exploration. But at the same time, she was racking her brains trying to find the perfect way to break the news to Aviva, since she was completely unaware of Deborah’s impending departure. Eventually, the decision was made for her.

“Okay everybody, it’s time for the staff meeting, please come to the conference room!” Nathan cried at exactly 9:00 am, like he did every Thursday.

Nathan had just found that morning about Deborah’s departure, so once everybody was in the room, the meeting started with the one and only subject that would be addressed that meeting. They had to distribute Deborah’s work, find a replacement and start working on the contingency plan for any situation that could arise.

As soon as the words left Nathan’s mouth, Deborah turned around to face Aviva. She knew Aviva would try to conceal her reactions but she saw it anyway. She saw the almost imperceptible twitch in Aviva’s face as her smile vanished and her eyes dimmed. For the rest of the meeting Aviva didn’t say a single word, avoided Deborah’s glance, and stopped taking notes altogether.

As soon as the meeting was over, Aviva excused herself and fled the conference room. Deborah knew where to find her, so she lost no time and went immediately inside the empty office they often used, finding Aviva standing against the wall with her eyes closed.

Deborah tried to approach her and received a flying notebook straight to her head. Followed by another one… and a few more. Soon the box filled with notebooks grew empty and there was nothing else to throw to Deborah but full and heavy boxes, which were, fortunately, sealed.

“When were you planning on telling me?” Aviva whispered, throwing punches at Deborah, tears falling from her eyes.

“I told you I was applying for a Master’s degree the day you hired me!” Deborah answered trying to dodge the hits.

“Yes, but you never said it was in another fucking continent on the other fucking end of the world! I hate you,” she spat as she hit Deborah with all her might. “I hate you, get out of my life!”

Grabbing Aviva’s fists in one fast movement, Deborah stopped the attacks and put her arms around her boss, holding her tight. She resisted at first, squirming, but quickly realized Deborah was far stronger. The fight subsided, leaving Aviva bent and wracked with sobs that drenched the younger woman’s clothes.

‘What am I supposed to do without you?’ she asked, sobbing against Deborah’s chest.
