Astray 1

The rabbi didn’t like him, just like he didn’t like any of the other suitors, and he voiced his objections vehemently to the shochet. But the decision was hers, and that boy was the chosen one.

The rabbi performed the wedding, which made her feel sad and relieved at the same time. He stood there in his beautiful, solemn attire, stoically blessing the happy couple. She thought she must be fooling herself when she saw shy, almost imperceptible tears on his eyes.

This marked the end of their affair. Their one episode of lovemaking–the day before the wedding–was to be completely forgotten.

No one asked any questions when she gave birth to a healthy baby girl exactly 9 months after the wedding, and nobody deemed suspicious the fact that the girl had bright green eyes, unlike her parents’ brown ones.

Years passed. He had three more sons with his wife and she had another son, another daughter. Now that her youngest was a year old, she decided  to pause this whole giving birth business, at least for a few more years.

She would say without hesitation that she loved her three kids equally, but she knew it wasn’t true. Her firstborn was just like her. Except for her eyes, she had the same curious spirit, the same thirst for knowledge.

On the eldest’ sixth birthday she asked her parents to give her a tallit katan like the one they gave her brother when he turned four. Much to her mother’s regret, she had to say no, and when her daughter didn’t eat or speak to her for three days, she knew it was time to take matters into her own hands regardless of her husband’s and everybody else’s opinion on the matter. She bought her daughter a tallit kattan and immediately went to pay a much belated visit.
