In the Beginning*

Before the beginning
Was the nothing,
The holy space,
Devoid and empty,
All-one yet alone,
The vacancy wanting,
Longing for fulfillment,
The void waiting and yearning –
All potential, all loving
All there – yet not.

In the beginning
There was the head,
The line, the rod, the pipe,
There was the longing,
The wanting, the waiting.
The seed to be cast,
To be flung into the unknown,
Into the knowing once known.

In the beginning
There was the crown,
The covenant,
Round and erect,
Firm and direct,
Stiff and perfect,
Ready to penetrate
To the heart of darkness,
Deep into your void
Of all-ness and nothingness.

In the beginning
Before there is flight,
Before there is union,
There is lightness of being,
As the head hovers
Over the waters of your abyss,
As arousal from below
Arouses arousal above,
As the waters above
Prepare to merge
With the waters below,
As the separation between
The first and the last
Thins to nothingness,
As bodies meet souls
In primordial eruption,
As matter and form collide
In eternal creations,
Annihilations, recreations.

In the beginning
The line descends
And enters the wanting,
Gliding along the waters
Of separation between
This side and that.
And as its length fills
All time and space,
A sound is uttered,
A bat kol of primal light,
A world of wordless words –
The moan of ecstasy
The utterances of joy,
The intoning of pure delight.

And after the beginning,
But before the end,
As the chaos swirls,
As the darkness clears,
As the union appears,
As the energy mounts,
As the heat rises,
As all separation separates,
As the longer can no longer,
As …as …az…
A shattering, a shaking,
A cry, a gasp, a howl,
A vessel imploding, exploding,
A rending of the ground of all being,
A tectonic shift of magnitude ten.

And after the beginning
And after the end,
Beads of sparkling dew
Lie scattered across the universes
Of your body and mine –
Radiant, precious, delicious,
To be collected on the tongue
Like a proboscis raising up the nectar
Of the elixir of life, of love, of passion exhausted.

Remember:
The end is in the beginning
But the beginning is in the end.

*The description of the creation of the universe is described in the Zohar and in Lurianic Kabbalah in very bold, erotic imagery of voids and lines and penetration and the passing of light and the fulfillment and the shattering and the aftermath. This poem plays with this language to enhance your personal experience of the cosmic drama.

I am a late-comer to poetry especially Jewish-laced love poetry. In the last two years I have written about 50 such poems that I am now trying to publish under the title - The Metaphysics of Love. They are about love - love for women as a metaphor for the Divine love - sometimes employing very erotic images inspired by the Song of Songs and Kabbalistic literature.
