Yom Kippur 2005, Yizkor (Memorial Service)
There’s a thumbnail
discarded on the floor
rolling into cat hair,
a tissue blown
into a tent of good-bye kisses.
The nail is
painted glow-in-the-dark and still pink,
reflects light, takes a curtain call. Gone.
I follow the Yizkor
meditation, my thoughts
wander to my new vibrator,
a molded purple plastic
water-proof super glide,
waiting for me at home
tucked between socks and panties
purchased the weekend before
while doing food shopping and going
for a walk with my friend and her dog,
the solemnity of making our days count.
I bless Ace Hardware for Double A batteries, enter
the High Holydays in a blaze.
Xbox Marks The Spot
The day after Thanksgiving
I’ll walk across the Great Mall,
use a credit card with a revolving account
turning pennies into gold and gold into health plans,
living at the edge of a culvert
where security systems cook dinners for the homeless,
taller than I ever thought possible, slinky,
my thighs like Sonya Blade in Mortal Kombat,
a member of my own Special Forces unit,
a knapsack of turkey bones wrapped in tinfoil—
Oh them bones, them precious bones
grow apartments from pizza crust.
I rub a mezuzah on the side of my computer,
conjure up Stephen Hawking on a good day
who stands at midnight in the Garden of Eden
wondering
what God was doing before he broke out the world.
Celebrating 10 Years & Marking the End of An Amazing Project
Celebrating 10 Years & Marking the End of An Amazing Project
I attended and participated in last month’s Jewrotica event. The engaging performers and Ayo, our inviting host, inspired the audience to feel like one big community. What a great way to inspire our community to embrace sex as a beautiful thing that can be fun, exciting, sacred, sensual, ridiculous, scary and everything in between!
My opinion on Jewrotica is: It’s sexy. It’s awesome. It’s Judaism to the next level. It’s what we should all be getting into!
I had a great time deejaying at the Jewrotica event at Columbia University. The live readings were hilarious, informative, and in some cases, deeply moving. I know that I, along with many of my AEPi fraternity brothers, loved being able to connect our Judaism and our sexuality in a way that made all of us feel comfortable and welcome. I look forward to being a part of this again in the future!
The people behind Jewrotica are quite quality! I have confidence that any project these folks take on will be equally quality.
What an incredible night Jewrotica was!!!! There was this fantastic moment, in a sea of Jews of all sexualities, ages, backgrounds and denominations, that I realized we were all in this together! I hope that there are many more events coming to Austin soon!
Jewrotica is something that the community has needed for a long time so that people can actually learn, express and share and have good relationships without having to stumble through life. Check out the site and learn something. Have fun!
Learning about sex and what’s right and wrong when it comes to sex from a Biblical standpoint was an eye opening experience. I completely enjoyed it and think something like this could be a very cool thing to bring to even high school aged Jewish youth groups.
You may not tell your mom that you’re going to a live Jewrotica reading (or whatever clever name you will dub these events) but you will tell your friends. However, both would be jealous if they find out that they missed it. I think it will only be a matter of time before Jewrotica helps us reclaim the term “Dirty Jew” the way rap music has done for “The ‘N’ Word.” I know I am now proud to be a Dirty Jew!
Jewrotica is inspiring Jews and erotica with holiness and coolness, and is the pride of progressive Judaism. Jewrotica – awesome!
I’m so glad that Jewrotica is represented here at Jewlicious! It’s bringing voices that need to be heard in the Jewish discussion and Jewish climate environment.
