Rated PG-13The Torah teaches that humans were created through supernatural forces, but that is not the only opinion among clergy. Members of the Raelian Movement believe that humans were created with genetic engineering by aliens. They view the human body as a beautiful thing that people should be proud to possess. Their dedication to gender equality and their appreciation for the human form motivate the Raelian Movement to organize Go Topless rallies.

An official at the rally explained the meaning behind the event as participants gathered near Columbus Circle in Manhattan. Go Topless rallies are about gender equality in modesty laws. The annual tradition takes place on the weekend closest to Women’s Equality Day (the anniversary of when women gained suffrage in the USA). Although the right to be topless in public is a small detail to start with, the movement sees it as their Tikkun Olam. By fighting for gender equality in small ways, they hope to bring peace on Earth.

As a minority religion, the Raelian Movement brings a fresh perspective to mainstream attitudes towards modesty and women. Go Topless is an attempt to reform nations that made sexuality and nudity, especially women’s sexuality and nudity, taboo due to mistakes in mainstream religions. Participants hope to lead by example, and they have succeeded in some cases. Denver residents attended a Go Topless rally without Raelian representatives, because they were inspired by rallies in other cities, the official explained.

She went on to say that even though New York State allows women to be topless in public, there is still work to do there. Demonstrators look forward to the day when being topless is so socially acceptable that no one would bother to take a picture of a topless woman. Society needs to understand that women are more than the sum of their organs and that breasts are just body parts that do not necessarily have to be sexual.

The rally kicked of with a jazz band playing as demonstrators marched down Broadway and the Avenue of the Americas until they were behind the Main Branch of the New York City Library. On the steps behind the building, speakers educated the audience about gender equality. They mentioned how women gained the right to show their legs, to vote, and to earn a living over time. The right to be topless without enduring sexual harassment or police responses is the next item in a long list of rights women fought for.

Jews should definitely sympathize with the Go Topless rally. From the atheist Jew who thinks DNA explains everything about humanity to the religious Jew who needs to occasionally explain trips to the mikveh in a conversation with gentiles, we know what it’s like to view sex and gender differently than the neighbors view them. At the end of the day, a woman’s breasts are just bits of flesh that won’t harm anyone, and women have the same inherent right to show skin that men have. Jews of all persuasions should wish success to the Go Topless cause. Perhaps they can even say, “Next year in Jerusalem,” when they attend American Go Topless rallies.
