A166 Shabbat Shma

Written by Benya Ezra. Benya, an experienced Jewrotica writer, is a masseur, actor, clown and vagabond poet who has studied theatre, film, music, writing, as well as tantra and kink under the tutelage of masters and fools.

Fooling and sooth saying, Benya hails from a proud family of visionaries and wordsmiths. He writes poetry, screenplays, letters, and manifestos. He plays games, ukulele, piano, saxophones, and a number of other instruments. His goal in life is to sow as much love into existence as possible. For more by Benya, check out No Soft-Lipped Poetry.

[Editor’s Note: The first line of each stanza below come together to create the Sh’ma, the Jewish monotheistic declaration of faith.]

Rated PG-13Listen
to the broad colors felling night
the life that chases a simple turning
a face to the dark wonder inspired by stars
the vast timelessness of night cricketing
as we hold hands, wrestling in bed
towards each other – seasons in the blush
of our cheeks, rains pouring like glory
in the battle of the sheets, we

Who Struggle with the Divine
must also love the mundane, the stink
of flowers and pleasure and bread dipped
in salt. this sweat is our gift to each other
our inheritance and covenant, in ecstatic
undulating, crying a quivering praise: O

God
shakes your voice, vibrates between
your flushed lips, a universe born
unto yourself – the hum of my tasting
rippling up your spine, the supernova
bleeding light out of your eyes and
declaring, demanding existence unto

Our God
in your dilation, our heaven in your
electrified skin – this is everything
out of breath and love and we trounce
all mythologies by our countless kisses
by the double-blessed giving, the simple

‘Is One’
of you
and me –
no future,
sans past,
knowing
all.
