Rated R“In Bed with Sean Connery” is an excerpt from Ex Libris, a supernatural-astrological murder-mystery/romance/dream diary. It follows Maya Bello, a library technician, who finds herself falling deep into a mystery involving an archaic society called The Order of Thoth. Maya is explicitly Jewish, and is constantly having her heart broken by Catholic boys. However, her friend Louis-David Luria, a Parisian formerly Hasidic grad student writing his doctorate on a fourteenth century astrological kabbalistic text, once told Maya that she “glowed with an indigo fire like the letters of the Hebrew alphabet on Mount Sinai,” and he offers her some sage advice on Lukas, the main Catholic heart-breaker. Sean Connery (who reminds her of Diego, the original Catholic heartbreaker) is a homicide detective assigned to the library murder who ends up in Maya’s bed. Deveraux is a mysterious figure that Maya encounters – he’s sort of part-mafia don, part-mystical puppet-master figure – and is a major player in the Order of Thoth. She finds out that he’s bound up in the death/murder that propels the story, as well as her erotic relationships with the other main men. I awoke slowly, blinking my eyes against the grey morning gloom. Sean Connery lay behind me, his arms wrapped around my torso.

I turned to face him.

“Who let you in?”

“Words, girl. Nothing but words,” he tightened his arms around me.

“You know, my Bat Mitzvah was in 1999, so it’s been a long time since I was a girl, Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” I said.

“Aw, you don’t need to convince me that you’re all woman. I mean, goddamn!” Connery pulled me closer, grinding me against his body, and inhaled approvingly.

It hit me again how weird life was: I’d wasted years obsessing over Lukas, wondering what went wrong and longing for him to be near me, for our arms to touch or our eyes to linger just one moment longer, and now, after all of the mystical and psychic twists of fate that led me to this moment, with Sean Connery in my bed, the thoughts raced through my mind all at once.

It had been such a long time since I’d woken up next to a man, wrapped in his warmth, with strong hands idling along my body.

“Hey, so listen. I know it’s way too early for me to ask this, or, uh, what your situation is, but uh, where is this going?” Sean Connery said. “Because I gotta tell you I’m not looking for any kind of complicated drama.”

“What are you talking about?” I asked.

“That punkass thug. Last time I was here, you remember, the guy who was getting all cozy on your bed, shooting daggers at me.”

I sighed and laid my hand on the small of his back, nuzzling myself into his body, speaking into his chest.

“You remember what D.H. Lawrence said about men in love?” I asked. “They come to their own idea every time, and take that. They are like serpents who try to swallow themselves because they are hungry.”

I stopped cold. I could hear Deveraux’s wicked rasping whisper echoing in my head. The dream. Something about serpents swallowing themselves.

Hungry serpents swallow themselves whole.

That was it.

That was it exactly.
